Increased attention has been paid to the issue of turnover among newly graduated nurses who leave their jobs at the initial stage of employment. This early turnover can be attributed to a gap between the skills acquired upon the completion of basic nursing education and those required at actual workplaces. Retirement on health grounds has increased as one of the reasons for the turnover. There are also signs of an increase in the number of newly graduated nurses who develop depression. In accordance with amendment of the law in 2009, novice nurses are required to make efforts to undertake post-graduate clinical trainings. There is an urgent need, on the one hand, to create an environment facilitating on-the-job training for novice nurses and improve the quality of such training at each institution. It is also important to consider the framework and methodology for novice training to prevent burnout among new nurses. As a baseline study on such trainings, this paper draws on motivation and burnout theories and reviews the literature on burnout among novice nurses to address pertinent issues, and examines how the feeling of burnout among novice nurses affects their work continuation. 続きを見る
