概要: The Echigo Plain facing the Sea of Japan is formed the coastal plain with area of 2,070 km^2. Many rivers such as Shinan o River and Agano River flow into this coastal plain, and formed the wide lowland. In the Niigata City with the river mouth of the two rivers, the lowland below the mean sea level “zero meter area” is widely extends. In this area, the occurrence of the widely inundated damage is predicted that the levee breach by flooding or earthquake, tsunami and storm surge are happened. Recently, the formative history of the Echigo Plain is reexamined from the investigation of remains and borehole data. These results show the high possibility that the swamp or pond will be formed by the subsidence of the ground involved the inland earthquake. The subsidence by the inland earthquake has presented the new problem, which is not included for the estimation of the earthquake damage of the Niigata region. 続きを見る

概要: The central city area of Nakanoshima Town, Niigata Prefecture was flooded by the rapid levee breach of the Kariyata River on 13 July 2004, which caused damages to many houses. Main flood streams flowed into the central city area, and changed the flow pass westward (clockwise) due to the presence of natural levee high. House damages of the central city area were concentrated approximately 250m around the point of levee breach. The damages were conspicuously occurred in vacant lots and/or streets which became passes of the flows with a hydraulic bore. Locality, house damages were reduced probably by rubbish and grove belts that contributed to reduction of the flow energy. Some house damages were observed 400m from the levee breach that may be caused by a reconcentration of streams. 続きを見る

概要: A tragic flood disaster was occurred by the unprecedented heavy rainfall around the Chuetsu area of Niigata Prefecture on July 13, 2004. The levees of the Ikarashi-, Kariyata-, and Chigoshimizu Rivers were broken in many places, and the many houses, then, were swept away and the wide area was under muddy flood water in Sanjo and Mitsuke Cities and Nakanoshima Town. The writers made the survey of this disaster and report on the situation of damage of houses, the area and depth of the flood, the scouring and orientation of flood current, and the relation of the damaged area to the geographical condition in this paper. 続きを見る

概要: Niigata-ken Chuetsu earthquake (M6.8) was occurred in the Chuetsu district in Niigata Prefecture at 17:56 23rd October, 2004. Damage becomes the large disaster of fatalities 46 persons, serious or slight injury person 4,791 persons, complete collapsed house 2,827, half collapsed house 12,746, partly failure house 100,453 at 18th March. Serious damages such as Kawaguchi Town and Ojiya City, which recorded seismic intensity of 7, are unevenly distributed. The localization of this damage seemed to appear by many factors such as strong motion, surface geology, structure and actual age of the houses etc. ln this study, distribution of building damage and subsurface deformation were mapped out in the western part of the Uonuma City (ex-Horinouchi Town) at the eastern part of the hypocenter. From the distribution of the completely collapsed house, the concentration of the damage of the western part of the Shin-Doujima were caused by the strong motion from the hypocenter. In the future, ground and geological structure will be examined from field investigations, seismic prospecting, etc. 続きを見る

概要: The Niigata Chuetsu earthquake (M6.8) occurred on October 23, 2004. It caused widespread hazards and damages in the Chuetsu area, Niigata Prefecture, which including 46 deaths, house destruction of more than 100,000, a great deal of land deformation and structures. Especially, a seismometer installed in the Kawaguchi Town, where located in the eastern part of the epicenter, recorded seismic intensity of 7. We investigated the earthquake hazards and property damages in the Wanazu district, Kawaguchi Town, and preliminary examined the geomorphological and geological aspects of land on which the houses are situated. Most of properties in this district are situated on four terrace surfaces, flood plain, natural levee and two alluvial fans. The house damages are concentrated on steep slopes of alluvial fans overlying terrace and gently slopes of alluvial fan deposits, and are also comparatively concentrated on terraces in the left bank of the Uono River. On the other hand, the house damages situated on terraces in the right bank of the Uono River are less than on which in the left one. Therefore, it is inferred that ground in the Wanazu district were received strong motion by the Niigata Chuetsu earthquake on the left bank of the Uono River. 続きを見る

概要: The Niigata Chuetsu earthquake occurred on October 23, 2004 (magnitude 6.8), caused severe hazards and extensive damages in the Chuetu area, Niigata Prefecture. This region is characterized by agricultural lands and hence, there is little variation of buildings and houses. Many Japanese style wooden houses were severely damaged. We investigated the damage of Japanese wooden houses and structures in the Tamugiyama district, Kawaguchi Town. Initially we examined the geomorphological and geological aspects of the land on which the houses are situated. Most of the houses and buildings in the district are situated on poor-sort admixture consisting of sand and mud gravel beds that has low resistance to ground motion. The house damages are concentrated in the east of the district probably due to the intensive spread of strong motion and earthquake energy. Also, the damages are obvious on the edges of terrace surfaces and on steep slopes of small-scale alluvial fans (taluses) accompanied with rupture of ground surfaces. 続きを見る

概要: A seriously damage by the Niigata-ken Chuetsu Earthquake in October 23, 2004, was occurred in the south-eastern area of Nagaoka City, which was distant about 10km from its epicenter. Many wooden buildings and dozohs (mud-walled buildings) were transformed, and collapsed, but damage to reinforced concrete building was slight. The damage to wooden buildings was focusing on the range of 80-100m width, extending toward the northeast-southwest, which is identical with the boundary of alluvial plain and more higher plain. 続きを見る

概要: Diatom flora of the Holocene borehole core (MG-1) from the Masugata area in Niigata was examined to infer the paleoenvironmental change in coastal area of the Echigo Plain. Over 180 diatom taxa were identified in the borehole core. Most of the horizons analyzed were characterized by fresh water species, and their environments were inferred as marshes, bogs and small ponds. 概要: The Echigo Plain lies on the back-arc side of Honshu Island, facing the Sea of Japan. The thickness of the alluvium bene ath the Echigo Plain reaches a maximum of 140m. The alluvium of the Echigo Plain is very thick compared to other alluvial plains in Japan probably because the Niigata area is located in an active tectonic zone in the back-arc side of the Japanese Islands and thus the Plain has continually subsided throughout the Holocene. The alluvium in the Niigata area shows high subsidence rates and provides a detailed record of glacio-eustatic changes of sea level in the Holocene, relative sea level changes due to tectonic movements, and changes in depositional system. Especially, the alluvium after Holocene maximum transgression provides important indications of the impact of tectonic movements on subsidence. On each core sample of the Ajikata, Yoroigata, Matsushima, Yamanoshita and Shimoyama in the Echigo Plain, this study examined the index volcanic ash and depositional facies. As this result, the transition of the sedimentary environment of each core was clarified, and the presence of the volcanic ash about 5000 BP of the Numazawa volcano origin also became clear. By the depositional facies analysis in these core and setting of the time base, it indicates that the plain is subsided at 13~19m during about 5000 year. This is the clear evidence that shows the subsiding of the alluvium. 続きを見る

概要: Many liquefaction phenomena caused by historical earthquakes are identified in the trenches of remains in Niigata Prefec ture. These liquefaction phenomena are described in detail according to the following features; locality of the remains, age of the remains, mode of occurrence of liquefaction, age of liquefaction, grain size of liquefied material, etc. In ancient liquefactions, as observed in the trenches of the remains, sand-boiling, sand-dyke, “draw-in” phenomena and deformation of liquefied soil beds were found. The draw-in phenomena can be distinguished from the “intrusion-spout”. This draw-in process is followed by the intrusion-spout process during the final stage of liquefaction. In previous studies, the “intrusion-spout of sand” is recognized as an exclusive phenomena of the liquefaction. The recognition of this type of liquefaction in addition to the draw-in phenomena and deformation of liquefied soil beds are important in understanding the whole deformation process of alluvial soil beds, caused by earthquake motions. 続きを見る
