概要: A big earthquake, registering magnitude 7.2 on the Richter scale, struck the Kobe metropolitan area and Awaji island in the southern part of Hyogo Prefecture at 5:46 on January 17, 1995. The epicenter was about 14 km beneath the northern tip of Awaji island. The most heavily damaged areas concentrated along the relatively narrow zone on the southern part of Kobe, Ashiya and Nishinomiya. The earthquake intensity at the damaged center of Kobe was originally announced to be 6 by the Meteorological Agency. It was later revised to be 7 after further damage investigations. The corresponding acceleration is more than 500 gal in wide areas. The highest value of acceleration was measured to be 818 gal at Kobe Maritime Meteorological 0bservatory. This earthquake killed about 5,500 lives and injured about 35,000 people. Many buildings and infrastructures were destroyed or burnt down. The number of destroyed buildings amounts to 171,500 affecting 259,000 households, while the number of burnt buildings amounts to 7,500 affecting 7,600 households. As a result more than 340,000 people suffered homeless state. About 260 outbreaks of fire burned up approximately 670,000 m^2 of the densely populated areas. Many bridges along railways and highways suffered severe damages which caused massive of transportation systems. Most of harbor facilities of the big Kobe harbor were heavily destroyed by liquefaction and almost lost their functions. Damages to utility lines caused interruption of electricity, gas and water supplies. Telecommunication lines were cut off due to damages to their facilities. The total damage was estimated to be about 100 billion US dollars. The authors have organized a task group of researchers between the Research Institute for Hazards in Snowy Areas and Faculty of Technology for general investigation of damages caused by this earthquake and carried out field reconnaissance just after the occurrence of the earthquake. In this report, the authors present an overview of various damages caused by this Great Hanshin Earthquake and further discussed the different aspects about the expecting damages which will be caused by potential big earthquake in Niigata region in some future. 続きを見る

概要: A small earthquake of M 4.5 occurred on December 27, 1992 at the southern border of Tsunan Town, the southern Niigata prefecture. The school buildings and gymnasiums at the epicentral area were seriously destructed by the quake. As no serious damages have been reported in recent Japan by the earthquakes of magnitude less than5, the damages were unusually large due to extremely shallow focal depth of 2 to 3 km. The distribution of the earthquake intensity on the scale of Japan Meteorological Agency is described with behavior of people at earthquake emergency. A historical review of local destructive earthquakes gives a conclusion that at an average interval of every five years local destructive earthquakes have been taken place in the southern Niigata prefecture. A seismo-geological interpretation based on the tectonic deformation of river terraces formed along the Shinano river reviles that the rate of uplifting of the studied area has been increased at 2 mm/year during last 50,000 years forming a dome structure of the Matsunoyama geothermal area. Before the earthquake thermal water anomalies occurred at the epicentral area. 続きを見る

概要: Erosion control engineering under the peculiar conditions in snowy areas is considered. Snowy areas occupy about 52% of the whole territory of Japan. It is keenly required to prevent of mitigate the natural disasters in snowy areas. In recent years many symposiums and workshops on snow utilization and mitigation of snow disasters are held. Since several years ago avalanche control works have been carried out in the framework of the erosion control works by the Ministry of Construction. Avalanches, floods by snow melting and slush flows, slope failures, debris flows and landslides caused by snow melting belong to the remarkable natural disasters in snowy areas. The characteristics of each phenomenon are analysed on the basis of the results of some case studies. Some technical remarks are made upon the peculiar system of the erosion control engineering in snowy areas. 続きを見る
