them. Firstly, the English immersion program is considered to be an effective method to positively motivate the students to take part in English courses. To know the advantages and disadvantages of the program, two of us went to Keio University and Asia University to inspect the English classes conducted according to this method. As a result, we have picked up the new idea that it is important to change from the method of simple knowledge transmission to that of problem discovery. Secondly, we need to know in what aspects the students are weak in order to organize effective English classes. Every teacher knows that the students have some weak points, but one teacher does not have the same knowledge as another does. We gave a common examination to the freshmen from all the faculties to make sure of our personal knowledge. The examination extends over five aspects of English: selectional restrictions, subject-predicate relations, causal relations, sentence parsing, and connectives. What we had learned by experience was verified. The result indicates the need for English teachers to bring together information about students' common mistakes and difficulty in studying English.

A questionnaire for improving class quality was conducted over all subjects of general education in the first term of this school year, following the trial of class evaluation questionnaire conducted at the end of the last school year.

Items of the questionnaire were adjusted to different class styles; lecture, exercise, experiment, practice and training. But three common points encompassed by the questionnaire are (1)difficulty in achievement in class, (2)students' consciousness and attitude toward learning, and (3)students' rating of teaching. Many students pointed out that lack of basic related knowledge is the reason for difficulty in achievement in class. The most serious problem for them is deficiency in reviewing and preparing for a lesson. More than 60% of students have no study hours at home for a regular lecture class. This fact demonstrates the shortcoming of the credit system.

Many of the staff pointed out that the necessary measures for effective good education were (1)reducing class size, (2)having students interact more with one another, (3)showing enthusiasm and making more effort in teaching, generally. The problem in teaching within general education is how to cope with a wide variety of students.
